Most women leave home improvement to men, saying its a man’s job. But when you want to remodel your home or improve it like the way you imagined it to be, it is better you be your own handywoman.
Here are some tips to tackle your own home improvement projects.
1. Get your own powertools: Invest in a portable wood saw, a jigsaw for slicing through metal and an extension cord allows you plenty of room in which to move around.
2. Toolbox: Here are 5 must have tools in your toolbox
a. Drill: A cordless drill is perfect for this purpose. Make sure it is lightweight and is suitable for your to grip. One with multiple speeds and with a reverse speed is preferable. If a drill is out of limits invest in a screwdriver kit.
b. A claw hammer:A hammer is fine but a claw hammer helps you yank out nails as well.
c. A measuring tape: Get one which is about 25 feet long, winds up, and has a lock button.
d. A level: 8- to 12-inch level is most useful – get one which is two in one so you can check your work vertically and horizontally.
e. Standard pliers: These are useful to cut wires, pull nails and other odd jobs.
3. Safety first: Safety goggles and a surgical mask are advisable to ensure your personal safety.
4. Start small: Start with smaller projects or parts of a larger project at first.
5. Measure thrice, cut once. This is true for any kind of DIY project – whether it is electrical, plumbing or carpentry.
6. Prevention is always better: Maintenance is cheaper than repair. Always check your:
a. Bathroom for leaky faucets or tubs
b. Check your electrical plugs
c. Watch out for weatherproofing
